A Toronto couple evacuated from their home during a highrise apartment fire in September say they have lost almost $15,000 in jewelry and cash.
Masoud Jamil and Salma Sultana told CBC News that dozens of gold bangles, rings, necklaces and earrings had disappeared from their apartment following the fire. They had collected the jewelry since their wedding 10 years ago.
"When I saw my jewelry box [was] empty then I cried," Sultana told CBC News.
Sultana said she had begged Toronto Community Housing to allow her back into the apartment after the fire to pick up the valuables, but it refused. The couple said the housing agency assured them their belongings would be safe.
"Every week I went, I said 'Give me two minutes, just give me two minutes.' They said no, not allowed," she said.
Toronto Community Housing was not immediately available for comment on Monday.
It earlier told CBC News that bonded agents through the insurance company packed up the belongings.
It said tenants would be compensated within reason for their losses.
The fire in late September forced an estimated 1,200 tenants from their homes in the Toronto Community Housing complex at 200 Wellesley St. E.
Residents of the 12 lowest floors of the north tower have mostly returned to their homes, but residents of more than 210 units on the higher floors will not be able to move back until sometime in the new year.
