The Island's Fisheries Minister is worried about the $17.5 million in cuts to the science budget of Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The cuts are part of Ottawa's plan to cut $57 million and 275 jobs from the federal fisheries department.

Minister Neil LeClair said P.E.I. fishermen rely on scientific assessments to ensure fishing plans are sustainable.

"With many of our species, understanding of the stocks is limited," said LeClair in a news release Friday. "There are already enough examples where poor understanding of the resource has led to a disaster."

LeClair said, if anything, science needs more funding, not less.

"I am extremely concerned that the budget cuts will jeopardize efforts to ensure a more sustainable fishery," said LeClair.

LeClair said P.E.I. fishermen are already contributing to lobster research, and he worries these cuts will mean fishermen and the province will be asked to help with other research.
