Lyle Lovett takes friends' songs on tour
KLEIN, Texas, (UPI) -- Texas singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett says his Large Band brings new dimensions to the songs from his latest album, "Natural Forces."
"The arrangements on the record allow us to be all out there at some points and really stripped down at others," said Lovett, who covered tunes by some of his favorite writers -- Eric Taylor, Towns Van Zandt, Robert Earl Keen and others -- alongside his originals.
"These are songs I've played my whole career, just by some of my favorite singer-songwriters. The drive, really, is just to enjoy playing them. Those guys don't need me to shine a light on them in any way."
The four-time Grammy winner and his Large Band kick off a summer tour July 9 in Norman, Okla., and will be on the road until Aug. 21. Lovett is also featured prominently in the new documentary "For the Sake of the Song: The Story of Anderson Fair" about the legendary Houston music club.
He's also starting to hatch ideas for his next album, though he said, "I want to do something that's a good idea -- that's as far along as I am right now."
