BOSTON -- Have a tough time going to work today? Bummed about the cold weather?

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper has a "special delivery" from an 83-year-old man that just may change your outlook on work -- and life.

Herbie Berman has been delivering mail for the U.S. Post Office for 50 years, most of it in the Adams Village section of Boston's Dorchester neighborhood.

Dressed in a long coat and hat, he was pushing his bag of mail down the street on a recent day, full of cheer and good spirits, calling out to his customers as he walked.

"He's amazing. He's really great with all the kids," said a resident.

Berman said he's a spiritual man who believes that when you give off positive vibes, you get them back.

"Say you're having an argument with somebody, and you picture them in your mind and you say, 'I love you.' It works every time," he said.

He said he loves the neighborhoods on his route and he loves delivering mail, especially when he's putting a check in someone's mailbox.

A widower for decades, he sponsors needy children. He says he has no money concerns.

"I really don't need anything other than simple living. I don't date anymore," he said.

He said he has no intention of retiring, even though he could have started collecting a pension 18 years ago.

"Not a chance," he said.

He said the one thing he dislikes is when it rains and he doesn't get to see the friends he's made along his route.
