A 21-year-old man who suffered back injuries and broken ankles in a 17-metre fall down a chimney at a school in Mississauga, Ont., early Thursday has been charged with trespassing.
The incident happened at around 2:30 a.m. at Gordon Graydon Secondary School near the Queen Elizabeth Way and Dixie Road.
The man and five friends were walking on the roof when the fall occurred. His friends called 911, and emergency crews arrived shortly afterwards.
Firefighters had to chisel through the bottom of the chimney shaft to get to him, said Alan Mills, a platoon chief with Mississauga fire services. The rescue took about an hour and half. The other five descended from the roof with a ladder, said Mills.
"This was a fall that could have been a lot more serious than the outcome right now," he said.
The man who fell suffered two broken ankles and back injuries.
The group has been charged with trespassing, and further charges are possible, said Mills.
