Man dies in fall from ship's mast
SAN DIEGO, A crew member aboard the Star of India died Sunday after falling 40 to 50 feet from one of the historic sailing ship's masts in San Diego Bay, authorities said.

City Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief John Fisher said Gregory Vance Gushaw, 68, a Maritime Museum volunteer, struck his head on the ship's iron hull as he fell into the water about 10:15 a.m., The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Gushaw was taking part in a training exercise with three or four other crew members when the incident occurred. He was wearing a safety harness and it wasn't know why he fell.

The cause of death had not been determined.

The Star of India, which has plied the oceans since1863, is the world's oldest ship that still sails regularly and is a major tourist attraction, the Union-Tribune said.
