One of the key players behind a failed gas exploration company in Souris is appealing his conviction on a charge of conspiring to commit fraud.

Edward Wenger, 71, was sentenced last month to two years in prison for arranging a fake natural gas find near Souris.

The fake flare prompted a surge in investment with Meteor Creek 10 years ago. The fraud was soon discovered, and the company went under.

In court documents, Wenger, who was project manager, argues the judge made numerous mistakes in finding him guilty, including believing the testimony of the company's president, David Fisher.

Wenger will be in court next month, arguing for his release from prison, until his appeal is heard.

Meteor Creek spent millions of dollars on a test well in Bear River in eastern P.E.I. in the summer of 2001. It issued a news release saying gas had been found, and used a propane tank to create a column of fire at the well.

The day of the flare, one million shares of the publicly traded company changed hands. Wenger sold 150,000 of his shares two days later.
