Miss Universe candidate ousted over ads

TORONTO, (UPI) -- Sophie Froment was booted from the Miss Universe Canada pageant after it was discovered she appeared in TV commercials for an extramarital dating Web site.

The 21-year-old law student lost her place in the competition Saturday after pageant officials learned she taped commercials for Ashley Madison, a Web site for people seeking to have affairs, the Toronto Star said.

Although the ads never ran in Canada because they were rejected by the TTC's advertising review committee for not meeting community standards, they did air in the United States and someone brought them to the attention of pageant officials, the newspaper said.

"(Froment) made some career choices that are not compatible with the image of women that our organization tries to promote, and which would disqualify her from representing Canada at the 2010 Miss Universe Pageant," said a statement on the Beauties of Canada Web site, which produces the Miss Universe Canada pageant.

Froment told the Star she was asked to bow out of the competition Friday, but refused.

"I have two dreams. I want to be a lawyer and I want to be an actress and a model," she said.

Referring to the sexy commercials that cost her her place in Monday night's pageant, she said: "It was a job. ... I'm proud of who I am. And proud of what I do."
