WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- Rookie Mike Leake baffled Washington on one unearned run over seven innings Saturday, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-1 victory.
Leake improved to 5-0 in his initial season, scattering seven hits, walking none and striking out five en route to his eighth straight quality start.
The 22-year-old has allowed only two earned runs over his last 26 1/3 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.22.
Orlando Cabrera and Joey Votto each contributed two hits and an RBI to help Cincinnati avoid its first three-game losing streak of the year. The Reds remained one game behind St. Louis atop the National League Central.
Luis Atilano (5-2), another rookie starter, absorbed the loss for the Nationals despite allowing only one earned run on six hits over seven innings.
