MLB: New York Yankees 11, Boston 9
NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- Marcus Thames's homer in the bottom of the ninth Monday capped a four-rally and gave the New York Yankees an 11-9 victory over Boston.

Trailing 9-7 entering the final frame, and facing Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon (1-3), the Yankees exploded for four runs to win their fifth game in seven contests this season against their archrivals.

Brett Gardner led off the ninth with a double and one out later Alex Rodriguez connected for a two-run shot to tie the game. Then, after Robinson Cano flied out and Francisco Cervelli was hit by a pitch, Thames unloaded a long blast to left field for the walk-off game-winner, setting off a wild home plate celebration.

Thames and Rodriguez each drove in four runs and Cervelli had two hits, an RBI and three runs scored in New York's dramatic win.

Javier Vazquez (2-4) was credited with the victory after getting the final out in the top of the ninth.

Victor Martinez hit two homers -- his second coming back-to-back with Kevin Youkilis in the eighth inning -- while J.D. Drew and David Ortiz also went deep in Boston's loss.
