Montero's goal with his fourth in eight games, during which he also has racked up five assists for the Sounders (7-8-4).
Sanna Nyassi provided a nice crossing pass that Montero got his head on and managed to put past Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch for the only score.
San Jose (6-5-5) could only put one shot on goal in the game. The Earthquakes saw their four-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
