Mother, child plucked from NYC river
NEW YORK, May 12 (UPI) -- A mother faces charges after jumping into New York's Hudson River with her baby daughter, authorities said after the pair were rescued.
The 33-year-old woman apparently had been distraught after fighting with her husband and tried to kill herself and her 18-month-old child, the New York Daily News reported.
Witnesses told the newspaper the woman removed the child from a stroller, climbed over a short fence and leaped into the river about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
"It was a nightmare to watch," said Lane Beauchamp, 43, who lives nearby. "You could see them bobbing down in the water, and they started to go under."
The Wall Street Journal reported the mother and child were hospitalized in stable condition. The woman was charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child, the newspaper said.
The Journal said police identified the woman as Debi Silvia, while the Daily News ID'd her as Devi Silva Dominic and the child as Jessica.
