New York beach tops 'Best Beaches' list
MIAMI, (UPI) -- A Southampton, N.Y., beach has been named No. 1 in an annual Top 10 Beaches ranking by a Florida researcher who calls himself "Dr. Beach," observers say.
Coopers Beach on the east end of Long Island beat out beaches in Florida, California and Hawaii for the honor, the Dr. Beach Web site announced Friday.
Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research, evaluates beaches by 50 criteria including water and sand quality as well as safety and environmental management.
The coastal scientist studies storm impacts, erosion and ways to improve beach health and safety.
The next three beaches in Leatherman's "Dr. Beach" ratings were Siesta Beach in Sarasota, Fla., Coronado Beach in San Diego and Cape Hatteras in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
