PHILADELPHIA, (UPI) -- Jeff Carter scored two goals Monday to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 win over Montreal and a 4-games-to-1 victory in the NHL Eastern Conference Finals.

With the win, the Flyers advance to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance since 1997. They will face the Chicago Blackhawks, who finished their 4-game sweep of San Jose in the Western Conference finals Sunday.

Carter's goal 4:31 into the second period came only 84 seconds after teammate Arron Asham had given Philadelphia a 2-1 lead. Carter's second tally was an empty-netter with 23 seconds remaining to ice the game and series win for the Flyers, who will be seeking their first NHL championship since 1975.

Mike Richards added a goal and two assists for Philadelphia.

Michael Leighton turned aside 27 shots, including 11-of-12 in the final period when the Canadiens staged a last-gasp attack.

Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez scored for the Habs, whose fairy tale post-season run from the eighth seed came to an end. They had gone 5-0 in elimination games, rallying from a 3-1 series deficit against Washington and a 3-2 hole against Pittsburgh in the conference semifinals.
