Obama stumps for Reid, Carnahan
LAS VEGAS, (UPI) -- President Barack Obama campaigned Thursday for Democratic candidates in two key U.S. Senate races, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
Speaking to a crowd estimated at 3,000 in Las Vegas, Obama called Reid "a man of principle."
"He is a straight shooter," the president said. "He is a man of his word."
Obama mocked Republican nominee Sharron Angle for saying Wednesday the $20 billion fund established by energy giant BP to pay for losses resulting from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was a "slush fund" -- a comment Angle subsequently said she regretted.
"I'm sure she meant slush fund the nicest possible way," the president said.
He also told the audience Angle has advocated phasing out Medicare and Social Security.
Earlier Thursday, Obama campaigned in Kansas City, Mo., for Senate nominee Robin Carnahan.
He said Carnahan -- who is running against Republican Rep. Roy Blunt for the seat being vacated by the retiring Republican Sen. Kit Bond -- was "not going to Washington to represent the oil industry or the insurance industry ... or Wall Street" but he said she would also not exclusively support his agenda.
"She is going to Washington to represent one constituency, and that is you, the people of Missouri," Obama said. "She is going to call it like she sees it."
During the Kansas City speech, the president criticized Republicans for what he called a legacy of tax cuts for people who did not need them and cuts in regulation for Wall Street and oil companies.
"We are headed in the right direction," he said. "The last thing we should do is go back to the ideas that got us in this situation in the first place."
