Offshore more than oil, EU says

STRASBOURG

France, (UPI) -- The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico provides the impetus to explore alternative maritime energy resources, the European director of maritime affairs said.

Maria Damanaki, a European lawmaker responsible for maritime affairs and fisheries, testified before the European Commission on the global impact of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

British oil company BP has been unable to stop oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico nearly four months after the Deepwater Horizon platform caught fire and sank.

"It is fully understandable that the European citizens and policy-makers are alarmed, in light of the developments in the Gulf of Mexico," said Damanaki.

She said the Gulf of Mexico disaster is forcing the European community to question its dependence on oil and the best management practices in regional waters.

Dependence on offshore oil, she said, comes at a price that may no longer be worth the price.

Damanaki said that instead of offshore oil and gas, it was time to examine alternative and renewable resources at sea.

"This energy is cleaner, will help us to achieve our climate action targets and will aid the diversification of energy sources," she said.
