A 71-year-old pilot survived the crash of his plane during an air show in Nanaimo, B.C.
RCMP Const. Gary O'Brien said the Vancouver Island resident was six minutes into an eight-minute routine when his aircraft lost power.
O'Brien said the routine was the first of eight scheduled at the local airport and that up to 1,000 people were watching from their cars parked about half a kilometre away.
He said the pilot, who was airlifted to a Vancouver hospital, has significant facial and internal injuries as well as broken bones.
O'Brien said the man was an experienced pilot and that his demonstration had been cleared by Transport Canada.
The air show was cancelled, and the airport was closed to traffic to allow for the assessment of the scene.
Transport Canada is investigating.
