Las Vegas, NV - A 67-year-old's walk with her ten pound Shih Tzu turned into a terrifying ordeal when a neighborhood Pit bull lunged into attack mode.

That Pit bull knocked the woman to the ground as she clenched on to her little dog.

While the Shih Tzu suffered the brunt of the attack, the emotional trauma was what weighed on his owner. Vie Lee Walter suffered a minor heart attack after the encounter.

A neighbor who intervened on the attack says she heard the urgent calls for help while she was taking a shower.

"I heard what I thought was a cat squealing, being killed. Really loud screeching. I put on some sweat pants and a sweat shirt, and I opened the door. I heard this woman yelling help me, help me," said Joan Wilks, who decided to intervene on the attack.

From what Wilks could see, the woman was cradling her dog from the Pit bull. She could see the small dog's skin was punctured and torn in multiple places, as the Pit bull kept going for it.

"I was afraid he was going to kill the lady. I went to his rear end and just started pounding on him, as hard and I could. I said get back get back, get off get off," explained Joan Wilks.

The Pit bull eventually darted away, while it became obvious that both Vie Lee Walter and Harley the Shih Tzu needed medical attention.

Walter was transported to Centennial Hills Hospital where doctors have performed an angioplasty. So far, loved ones say her recovery is going well.

The Shih Tzu was taken to Craig Road Animal Hospital, where vets are trying to prevent any infections from several deep puncture wounds. The Pit bull's teeth sunk in dangerously close to Harley's jugular.

Veterinarians say if the Pit bull held on much longer, it could've cut Harley's main artery.

Some neighbors in the community near Jones and Lone Mountain say they're "concerned" that the Pit bull who attacked hasn't been quarantined by Animal Control.

"She had a heart attack. She could've died. Then what was going to happen? The dog should've been quarantined immediately," said Joan Wilks. "I just know we should be able to walk our dogs in the neighborhood without being terrified."

Animal Control says it cannot comment on the specifics of on-going cases, but this case is in fact being investigated. An officer has visited the home where the Pit bull lives.

Meantime, the Pit bull's owner is defending his dog. He says that understands the concerns but assures his neighbors that they have no need to worry.

"He's far from vicious. It was an isolated incident. They're well behaved dogs. They're trained," said Jim Hulbert, whose says his dog somehow escaped from the front door.

Hulbert was not home when it happened, however his mother was. He says his three dogs are friendly around children and even sleep in bed with him at night.

"It was an accident. They're not trained to kill. They're not fighters. They're actually big babies. They just lay around the house all day," added Hulbert.

Hulbert said he may be required to enroll his dog in obedience class. His family has offered to pay for some of the Shih Tzu's veterinary bills. So far, the expenses for that dog total around $700 dollars.
