Police: Texas mayor killed daughter, self
DALLAS, Coppell, Texas, Mayor Jayne Peters apparently shot and killed her daughter and then took her own life, police said Wednesday.
Peters and her 19-year-old daughter Corrine were found dead Tuesday evening, both dead of gunshots to the head, The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday. Police discovered the bodies after Coppell City Manager Clay Phillips asked them to check on the mayor because she did not show up for a City Council meeting, the newspaper said.
Investigators said a key was posted on the front door of the home, along with a note indicating what police would find inside, the newspaper said. There were three more notes inside the house, providing instructions for taking care of family pets but offering no explanation for the shooting.
Corinne Peters was planning to attend the University of Texas at Austin this fall, friends and neighbors told the Morning News.
Peters, 55, a contract software developer, became mayor of Coppell, about 16 miles north of Dallas, last year and had served on the City Council since 1998.
Jayne Peters' husband Donald Peters died in January 2008 of cancer at age 58.
Coppell spokeswoman Sharon Logan said Jayne Peters had shown no signs of personal turmoil.
"I would say it was a complete state of shock for everyone," she said.
