Quebec roads close with snow, ice storm

Blowing snow and icy roads caused several accidents and injuries all over Quebec Monday afternoon.

Transport authorities closed roads in major urban centres because of poor visibility caused by wet snow and mild temperatures.

A man in his 50s died when his car slid off the road near Val-Alain on Highway 20, southwest of Quebec City.

A woman in her 30s is in critical condition after a head-on collision in the Malbaie area, where an ambulance transporting her to hospital spun off the road, hit a post and a car before slamming into the front porch of a house.

Later in the day, a 70-year-old Montreal man was hospitalized with critical injuries after he was hit by a car on Cote-des-Neiges Road.

In Montreal and Quebec City, several pile-ups were reported as rush hour got underway in treacherous weather conditions.

On the West Island, one lane of Highway 40 eastbound near St-Charles Boulevard was temporarily closed because of a fender bender.

On Montreal's South Shore, one lane of Highway 10 westbound near the 30 was closed to traffic after several cars slid off the road.

In Quebec City, a pile-up involving more than 20 cars forced the temporary closure of a section of Highway 73.

In the provincial capital region, Highways 132 and 20 between Lévis and Montmagny were closed, stranding some commuters.

Police are urging drivers to be cautious on their way home.

Environment Canada has issued a blowing snow warning for the South Shore, Central Quebec, Quebec City, the Saguenay, the Charlevoix North Shore and the Gaspé.
