BALTIMORE -- After several days of coping with biting cold, Maryland residents on Friday dealt with snow that contributed to clogged roads and dozens of accidents.
Some of the most significant snow occurred in Carroll County, where police said afternoon driving conditions were treacherous and that salt trucks were being used to treat the roads. Police reported dozens of accidents and asked residents to stay off the roads if possible.
Carroll County officials put a snow emergency plan in place at 12:50 p.m. and said only vehicles equipped with snow tires or equipped with chains should be on the roads Friday afternoon.
Viewers in the WBALTV.com Live Wire blog reported snow in a number of areas including Reisterstown, Hampstead and Elkridge. One commenter reported seeing heavy snow in Glen Burnie.
Park Heights between Greenspring Valley and Caves Road was a sheet of ice, with multiple accidents and stranded cars. Caves Road between Park Heights and Greenspring Avenue was covered with ice and stranded cars, and the road was completely blocked at about 2:30 p.m.
Baltimore County police said roads were being treated with salt as well. Police reported a crash between a bread truck and a passenger vehicle in the 14500 block of Jarrettsville Pike. At least a half-dozen crashes were reported in Cockeysville, and at least seven crashes were reported in Franklin.
State Police reported a 10-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 70 between Frederick and Hagerstown. Seven victims, mostly children, were taken to Washington County Hospital after the pile-up at the 38-mile marker.
At 3:45 p.m. Friday, authorities said there was still "stop and go" traffic on I-70 and other major county routes.
A number of accidents were also reported on Howard County roads, including U.S. 29.

Lois Szymanski wrote, "I can't believe we wove through 5 disabled and wrecked cars and a tractor trailer and made it alive. The hill in Union Mills is closed with an accident and there are accidents all around us. I am finally home in Union Mills and thanking God. What a mess. Stay home!"
Saturday will see increasing clouds, and Saturday night's forecast calls for a chance of rain, sleet and freezing rain after midnight.
On Sunday, the 11 News viewing area could see freezing rain and sleet in the morning, heavy rain in the afternoon and a chance of snow showers.
There is also a chance for snow flurries Monday and Tuesday.
