Skulls and bones clutter cemetery

KINGSTON

Jamaica, (UPI) -- A cemetery in Jamaica's capital is facing a major expense to bury dozens of bones that have been disinterred by man or nature, an official says.

Kingston Town Clerk Errol Green said he is aware skulls and bones are protruding from shallow graves in sections of the 200-acre May Pen Cemetery, The Gleaner reported Thursday.

Green said many of the bones appear to come from graves that have either collapsed or were removed by humans.

Cemetery workers told the newspaper many of the exposed bones were from the graves of paupers who are often not buried according to the law.

The workers said in some instances pauper graves are only three feet deep rather than the five-foot depth mandated.

Green said it would cost a lot of money to bury the exposed remains.

Jamaica's Ministry of Health and the United Nations Development Program have been contacted to help with the cost, The Gleaner said.
