A soldier has died after falling off a roof at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier near Quebec City.
Cpl. Jean-Michel Deziel was installing a telecommunications antenna Monday morning when he fell, according to a military statement. He was immediately taken to Laval Hospital in Quebec City, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident is under investigation by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service.
A member of the Headquarters and Signals Squadron, an integral unit of the 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, Deziel joined the military nearly 4½ years ago.
He served a tour in Afghanistan in 2009 as a signals operator.
One of the key roles of the soldiers in the Headquarters and Signals Squadron is to provide communications links between command elements and operational forces, a military statement said.
"This young soldier who served a tour in Afghanistan had a resoundingly promising career ahead of him in the Canadian Forces," said Col. Jean-Marc Lanthier, commander of the 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade, in the statement.
"His unexpected and premature death represents a profound loss to our organization."
