Sugar-sweetened drinks: Should they be taxed?

The issue of imposing taxes on sugary drinks will be the focus of an upcoming conference hosted by the Quebec Coalition on Weight-Related Problems.

Sugar-sweetened beverages - regular soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit beverages, sport drinks - are contributing factors in the increased rates of obesity and diabetes, the coalition says. Taxing them would allow the government to recoup some of the costs needed to fund treatment for those conditions, while serving as a disincentive for potential purchasers.

Such taxes are already in place in several U.S. states and cities, though no such tax exists in Canada.

But not everyone agrees that taxing sugar-sweetened beverages is a good idea.

"Leave Canada's fat people alone!" columnist Eric Duhaime argued in Thurday's Calgary Sun.

"It is up to each of us to decide our perfect equilibrium of calories in and calories out," Duhaime wrote.
