An 18-year-old from North Dakota is dead after being hit by a pickup truck as he sought aid along a Manitoba highway, RCMP say.
The man, whose name was not released, was walking north along Highway 32 about 4 kilometres south of Winkler, Man., around 1 a.m. CT Saturday when he was hit. Police said he died at the scene.
In a news release, RCMP noted the young man was wearing dark clothing and "may have been walking on the highway to get assistance in Winkler."
The man's vehicle was located in a ditch not far from where he was struck.
Police added that low visibility in the area may have been a factor and noted that the driver of the pickup truck, an 18-year-old from the rural municipality of Rhineland, had not been drinking.
They said the victim's family had been notified of the death. An autopsy was also expected.
Winkler is about 125 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg, and about 20 kilometres from Manitoba's border with North Dakota.
