GREENSBORO, N.C. —
There was no school Thursday or Friday, but that didn't stop students from stopping by Northwest Guilford High School to remember one of their own.
More than 200 students showed up at the school's media center Friday to pay tribute to sophomore Chase Bunting. Students painted two large rocks in front of the school in memory of Bunting.
Bunting died Wednesday from injuries sustained while skateboarding. Doctors said Bunting suffered trauma to his brain stem, and he was not wearing a helmet.
"He was a great guy. He meant a lot to everybody at the school. We're gonna miss him a lot," Marlana Arthur, Bunting's classmate and friend, said.
Bunting was a member of the school's lacrosse team, and all his teammates joined his parents for a dinner in his honor.
The team also walked in together during the varsity football game Friday night before holding a moment of silence. The football team carried in two lacrosse sticks, and students wore green to the game.
The junior varsity team also paid tribute Thursday night by wearing Bunting's initials on their helmets. They beat West Forsyth 24-16 to finish the season undefeated, and afterward the team dedicated their season to Bunting.
Grief counselors will be at the school Monday. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Westover Church on Muirs Chapel Road in Greensboro.
