A man was arrested Thursday afternoon after reports of a gunman near Kingsclear Consolidated Elementary School in Fredericton, N.B., caused the school to lock down.

Fredericton police told CBC News a man surrendered to police and that all of the school's students were safely home.

Speaking before the arrest, Sgt. Tim Durling of the Fredericton police said they had no reason to believe there was any threat to the school, but three officers were stationed there as a precaution as students left for the day.

"There's no indications of any harm to anybody else. We have our emergency response team on scene, we have our dog section on scene and we have other staff members to deal with the issue on scene," he said.

Police had asked people to stay away from the Fairview Drive area of Silverwood.

"At approximately 2 p.m. we received a call about an incident in the Silverwood area of Fredericton, with regards to a man in a domestic dispute with a family member. He left his house distraught, and as a result we have police on scene trying to locate this person," he said.
