Winnipeg police have arrested a man in connection with the abduction of a teenage girl in a stolen van.
Air1, the Winnipeg Police Service helicopter, played a crucial role in the arrest, police said in a news release on Thursday.
It all began with a report of shots being fired in the 1800 block of Elgin Avenue West just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
Officers learned that a man had approached a parked van occupied by two girls, both 16. He climbed into the driver's seat, indicated he had a gun and immediately sped towards Keewatin Street, police said. One of girls managed to escape, but the second was unable to get out of the van in time.
About a half-hour later, police received an emergency call from a teenaged girl in the St. Francois Xavier area. Officers located the teen and confirmed that she had been abducted from the Elgin Avenue area by a man who had sexually assaulted her, police said.
Police also learned a suspect, accompanied by a female victim, had stolen a Pontiac Sunfire from another man.
Quad ATV stolen
At about 11:30 p.m. police were told a man had made an unsuccessful attempt to steal a truck near Portage la Prairie. A quad ATV was later reported stolen from the same location, police said.
The suspect found a filling station and filled the ATV's tank, speeding toward Portage La Prairie after failing to pay for the fuel.
Air1 spotted the ATV and kept it under surveillance while keeping ground units apprised of its location.
A tactical team unit attempted to pull the van over but the man turned off the road into a gravel pit. Several police cruisers that attempted to follow immediately became stuck. However, Air1 was able to direct officers to the spot where the suspect had abandoned the quad and was now travelling on foot.
At about 1:00 a.m. officers located a man hiding in the area of the Portage Diversion. With the help of a police dog the man was taken into custody.
Charges are pending, police said.
