Pearson International Airport in Toronto expects about 100,000 travellers on Saturday.
Saturday is expected to be the busiest travel day of the year, with more than 200,000 people passing through Toronto transportation hubs.
Pearson International Airport officials said about 95,000 people moved through its terminals Friday, and another 100,000 will pass through Saturday, making it the busiest travel weekend of the year.
Airport staff will sing Christmas carols and give out free candy canes to keep the crowds happy and relaxed, officials said. The airport has also arranged for Mrs. Claus to visit on Saturday.
Airport authority spokesperson Scott Armstrong had some advice for travellers.
"Check on your flight time before you come out to the airport," he said. "A little bit of extra time will likely be required."
Armstrong also warned against wrapping gifts before travelling, since airport security staff may have to peel away the paper during luggage inspections, which takes time.
Toronto's train and bus stations were also busy Friday.
"I would say its 15 to 20 percent busier today than a normal Friday," said bus driver Don Teeple. "It's better than driving."
Inner-city travel busy
Even those who are staying in Toronto were on the move.
Autoshare, which offers car-sharing services in the GTA, said its fleet of more than 200 cars is almost booked up.
George Kozyrakis, the company's general manager, called it "the perfect car-sharing weekend," as people use the cars for shopping, picking up turkeys or buying Christmas trees.
"We know this typically from finding the pine needle evidence in the trunks."
Weather isn't expected to hinder travel this weekend.
