U.S. markets flat Friday
NEW YORK, (UPI) -- U.S. markets turned flat Friday in New York, a strong rally in the previous session colliding with May's retail report.
The Dow Jones industrial averaged added 273 points Thursday and closed above 10,000 points for the first time in a week. By Friday morning, however, the embers of the rally had cooled down.
The Commerce Department said retail sales fell 1.2 percent in May compared to April. Excluding automobiles, retail sales 1.1 percent in the month, despite expectations that sales would rise slightly.
In early afternoon trading, the DJIA lost 15.80 points, 0.16 percent, to 10,156.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 shed 0.06 percent, 0.65 points, to 1,086.19. The Nasdaq composite index gained 0.51 percent, 11.41, to 2230.12.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose 22/32 to yield 3.246 percent.
The euro fell to $1.2065 from Thursday's $1.2141. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 91.62 yen from Thursday's 91.31 yen.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index rose 1.7 percent, 162.60, to 9,705.25.
In Britain, the FTSE 100 index rose 0.61 percent, 31.18, to 5,163.68.
