U.S. military ID's 2 sailors

KABUL, Afghanistan, The U.S. Defense Department Wednesday identified the two sailors who disappeared in Afghanistan last week, one of whose body has been found.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin McNeeley, 30, of Wheatridge, Colo., and Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove, 25, of Renton, Wash., were reported missing Friday in Afghanistan's Logar province. McNeeley's body was found Sunday after an extensive search, the Defense Department

said and the hunt continues for Newlove, who was believed to have been with him.

A Pentagon spokesman, Marine Corps Col. David Lapan, said Newlove will be listed as "duty status whereabouts unknown" unless or until there is firm evidence he has been captured.

The Taliban's statement that they have captured him is not enough, Lapan said.

"There's no information on his whereabouts, but that's what we're working hard to figure out," Lapan said.

Lapan said media reports the sailors were taken captive after taking a wrong turn in a truck "are highly speculative."

Army Spec. Robert "Bowe" Bergdahl, who went missing from his post in Afghanistan on June 30, 2009, is the only U.S. service member confirmed to be held captive by the Taliban.
