U.S. to double broadband for commerce
WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- President Barack Obama is expected to approve an auction of 500 megahertz of the wireless communication spectrum for U.S. commerce, The New York Times reported.

A memorandum the president was expected to sign Monday would nearly double the spectrum available to commercial uses, with 45 percent of the portion to be auctioned coming from government agencies that have been asked to give up portions of the spectrum, the newspaper said.

The plan includes offering incentives for businesses to also give up or share portions of the wireless spectrum under their control.

The rest of the airways up for grabs are portions of the spectrum that were already scheduled for auction.

Public law enforcement and safety agencies have asked that a portion of the available spectrum be used for a broadband network dedicated to public safety, the newspaper said.
