- A 6-year-old child was incorrectly placed in the care of Child Protective Services after a communication breakdown on what was the student’s first day at Indianapolis Public Schools, the school system confirmed Thursday.

A police report detailed officials trying to determine the identity of the child, as the boy could only remember his first name and the first names of his parents. There was also confusion about which school he was attending.

According to the police report, the boy was picked up by an IPS bus at Falcon Drive and Alberta on Wednesday morning. He was dropped off at IPS School 68.

IPS officials said Thursday the boy was enrolled on Tuesday and because of the child’s family’s residence on the west side, he was placed in Clarence L. Farrington School 61. However, as a result of renovations at School 61, the students enrolled there are actually attending classes at School 68.

When the boy arrived to the school, staff members couldn’t find enrollment information for him. His Spanish accent and missing front baby teeth made him difficult for staff to understand.

The boy was turned over to the CPS before a staff secretary discovered his enrollment information. School officials say they are going to start using a new process for identifying new students to avoid similar situations in the future.

"IPS regrets that Faustino was unable to enjoy his first day at his new school because of this miscommunication," said Office of Student Assignment Director Richard Grismore, in a news release. "We want every student to enjoy happy and productive school days."
