The water main break near Malvern Town Centre quickly flooded the nearby roads.
A busy intersection near Malvern Town Centre in east-end Toronto is open to traffic again after nearly a metre of water covered the street corner for much of Thursday afternoon.
City crews say a contractor working for Toronto Hydro broke a water main at the intersection of Neilson Road and McLevin Avenue just before noon.
"A construction crew working on a power line — doing what they call ground rods, or stainless steel rods they drive in for Hydro — they hit a [water main] going into the plaza. The steel bar went through, ruptured the pipe and that created the flood," explained city worker Rob MacDonald.
Water was shut off for about three hours to homes in the area and to the Malvern Town Centre, but the mall stayed open on one of its busiest shopping days.
Full service was resumed by the middle of the afternoon.
