Winnipeg police have arrested a man in connection with the slaying of two young men early Saturday.
Darren Joey Swampy, 19, and Lee Brady Spence, 22, were shot to death following a dispute at a house party in Winnipeg's inner city.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident but has not yet been charged, police said.
Police responded to reports of gunshots outside 425 Elgin Ave. about 2:40 a.m.
Police said it appeared the two victims, along with others, were evicted from a house party in the 300 block of Ross Avenue. A short time later the victims met up with a man who had also been evicted from the party. The man drew a gun, fired at the victims and then fled.
"There was some conflict at this party — at this house party — earlier in the evening," said Winnipeg police Const. Jason Michalyshen. "And things escalated. It escalated to the point where our suspect produced a firearm and discharged it."
Swampy and Spence were taken to hospital in critical condition, where both later died.
Swampy's former girlfriend Shaylene Wilson described him as fun-loving.
"He was funny — he was always happy, smiling," she said. "He was always making jokes. He just loved being with his friends. He said the weirdest things at the most awkward times."
The deaths are the fourth and fifth homicides of the year for the city.
