Bail $1 million for McCluskey, Welch
PHOENIX, Bail was set at $1 million for murder suspects John McCluskey and Casslyn Welch Friday, the day after the cousins' three-week run from the law ended in Arizona.
KSAZ-TV, Phoenix, reported the pair were in prison garb and shackles during their initial appearance on a string of kidnapping, escape and related charges in Apache County Superior Court in St. Johns. They are not yet charged with murder.
The pair are to be held in Kingman and return to court Aug. 27.
The TV station said McCluskey and Welch were caught after a forest ranger spotted a vehicle parked near an unattended campfire on the edge of Apache Sitgreaves National Forest. The ranger talked to McCluskey and later checked the license plate on the vehicle, which had been reported stolen.
A SWAT team was brought in to make the arrests.
KSAZ-TV reported McCluskey later allegedly told authorities he should have shot the ranger on the spot. He allegedly told SWAT team members they could find his gun in his tent and that he would have gone down shooting if he had been holding it when police showed up.
McCluskey, 45, and Welch, 44 -- who had been at large since Welch allegedly helped McCluskey escape from a privately run prison in Kingman, Ariz., July 30 -- were captured in Apache County, The Arizona Republic reported.
Welch, who is said to be McCluskey's fiance, allegedly helped him escape, along with Tracy Province and Daniel Renwick, by cutting through a security fence, authorities said after the breakout.
Province and Renwick have already been brought back into custody.
Investigators say McCluskey, Welch and Province, who was arrested Aug. 10, are the sole suspects in the killing of an Oklahoma couple whose bodies were discovered Aug. 4 in a burned out trailer in New Mexico.
