BOURNE, Mass. -- One man’s misstep left him in a Boston hospital in serious condition on Sunday.

A Cape Cod man was injured when a broken-down car he was trying to push up a steep driveway rolled back at him, and then over him.

“I heard a thundering sound,” said the man’s neighbor, Roberta Barss.

His neighbor said she ran out to find his daughter calling for help. She said he’d lost his footing and had been run over.

“She was saying my dad was under the car but she was so hysterical,” Barss said.

Barss raced over to alert his wife while his daughter called 911.

“The car was parked there beyond those boulders,” said Barss. “The poor guy whatever happened he went under the car and this is where it wound up.”

They were told by dispatchers to keep the man talking, heartened by the fact that he remained conscious and could move his toes.

They brought out cold compresses for his bleeding head.

“He was laying with his head that way and feet under the rear of the car,” Barss said.

Even after rescuers got him out from under the car, the ambulance couldn’t make it down the incline because it was a very dark evening.

The EMTs had to lift the 57-year-old father of four onto a stretcher and carry him to the ambulance.

“I looked down and there was poor Joe, laying across like that,” said Barss.

The man’s injuries were initially described as life threatening so paramedics wanted to use a helicopter to get him to a Boston hospital. But, it was too windy, so the man was driven to a local one instead.

The man is listed in serious condition, upgraded from critical condition. The car has been towed away.
