DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A suspicious device found in Volusia County has been dismantled after it earlier prompted officials to close a roadway, police said.
The device was found next to a trash can on George W. Engram Boulevard near Charles Street in Daytona Beach.
According to Daytona Beach police, a caller reported that some men wearing hooded sweatshirts left the device next to the trash can. Later, police arrested Jeremy John Maruska, 18, on charges of making a false report to law enforcement and planting a hoax bomb.
The device was described by police as two propane canister-type objects with wires and duct tape connected to a bag and some white powder on it.
Police said the incident was likely a hoax, but tested it and later dismantled it after determining there was no need to blow it up.
Video from Local 6 News helicopter Sky 6 showed an orange object that appeared to be leaning against a green trash can and a bomb squad robot investigating.
Engram Boulevard was closed between U.S. Highway 1 and Charles Street during the incident.
