A man arrested Tuesday after Ottawa police found a homemade explosive device in the car he was driving made a brief court appearance Thursday.

Chad Baillargeon, 35, formerly of Gatineau, Que., but now of no fixed address, made a one-minute court appearance Thursday around 3:30 p.m.

Baillargeon is facing five charges in total, including unlawful possession of an explosive substance with the intent to endanger life, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, and possession of incendiary material for arson.

He is also charged with allegedly breaching a weapons prohibition order stemming from an earlier response.

Police said they found the explosive during what they described as a routine traffic stop in Ottawa's Glebe neighbourhood Tuesday night.

The police explosives unit was called in to deal with the package, which was taken to a police compound and dismantled.

Const. Cathy Larouche said the package had all the components of an improvised explosive device, but at no time was the public in any danger. She also said there was no reason to believe the incident was connected to terrorism.

Baillargeon is set to appear in court again Monday. He will remain in custody.
