DISH Wins Million-Dollar Judgment in Retail Case

DISH Network said it obtained a significant financial recovery in a retailer fraud suit, receiving $1.24 million in civil restitution in the case.

The restitution was assessed against former retailer Satellites and More, the company said. In the civil suit, DISH Network alleged that Joseph Masek, through Satellites and More, allegedly falsified information to illegally obtain new customer account incentives.

Based on the fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Colorado filed criminal charges against Masek. He pleaded guilty to a wire fraud charge, DISH said.

Last Friday, Masek was sentenced to 33 months in prison, followed by three years of probation, and was ordered to pay an additional $663,000 in restitution to DISH Network, the company said in a statement.

"DISH Network will not tolerate any forms of retailer fraud and will continue to aggressively pursue and take action against retailers and other parties engaging in fraud," said Jeff Blum, vice president and associate general counsel at DISH Network.
