GARDEN CITY, GA - Authorities are investigating a suspicious package. It was delivered by mail to Vantage Freight Systems, a truck line owned by Nancy Knight and her husband.
Knight said they picked up a package early Monday morning from the Garden City Post Office. When they opened it that afternoon, they found a threatening letter inside along with another package. The letter stated there was a bomb inside.
The package inside was wrapped in bubble tape. The employees immediately called for help.
"[It] had some baggies, one with pepper and the other inside. It was kind of rolled tightly and the letter said the pepper was to disguise what was in the other baggies in case a dog sniffed it. We came back and called police and they're checking out now," Knight told WTOC.
Multiple agencies responded, including the Garden City Fire Dept., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Savannah HAZMAT, Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Bomb Squad and the Chatham Emergency Management Agency. The area was shut down to traffic for a couple of hours.
The Garden City Fire Dept. tested the package and confirmed there is "volatile organic material" inside; however, they have verified that the package is not a bomb. It was sent to the GBI crime lab for more testing.
