When you do a hard reboot, is it common for the drive to be detected but have to do a format in order to begin recording with it again?

If its coming up and wanting to format right away it is probably screwed. Make sure your pin connections (master,slave,cableselect) are set properly. Is this a new external? Try another hard drive in it - that shouls tell the tail.

I turn mine off & on all the time never have that problem.......
