Man sails 932 miles on soda bottle raft
SHANGHAI, -- A Chinese man traveling to Expo 2010 Shanghai said he sailed 932 miles on a raft made of plastic bottles but was stopped from sailing into the Expo Garden.
Xia Yu, 36, a pub owner from Hunan Province, said he traveled to Shanghai on his raft, made from 2,010 soda bottles and a wood frame, but his application for permission to sail into the Expo Gardens through a water gate on the Huangpu River was denied, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday.
Local maritime officials said the vessel was too slow to safely navigate the Huangpu River. Xia said he docked the raft in a nearby suburb and took a train to the Expo Garden.
"I've been sailing for 156 days to see the Expo Garden," Xia told the China Daily. "The journey has been much more turbulent than I had expected before I launched the raft."
"I just want to promote a lifestyle with a low-carbon footprint and raise awareness to protect the water environment, just like the Shanghai Expo advocates," Xia said." It's not really all about myself -- it's about an environmentally friendly lifestyle."
