ST. LOUIS, Chris Carpenter limited Los Angeles to a run in an eight-inning effort Thursday, carrying St. Louis to a 7-1 victory over the Dodgers.
The Cardinals moved within a half game of division-leading Cincinnati thanks to a comeback performance from Carpenter (10-3).
In his previous two outings, Carpenter had allowed a total of 11 earned runs on 18 hits in suffering a pair of losses.
He gave up only four hits to the Dodgers, one of them a fourth-inning homer by Andre Ethier. Carpenter is 6-0 in eight lifetime starts against Los Angeles.
Allen Craig drove in a pair of runs with a fielder's choice grounder and a sacrifice fly. Albert Pujols had three hits and scored once.
Manny Ramirez came off the disabled list for the Dodgers and was hitless in three at bats. He had been out of action since June 29 with a strained right hamstring.
The loss went to Clayton Kershaw (9-5), who surrendered five runs on eight hits in 4 2/3. He had won his last two starts.
