MLB: St. Louis 9, LA Angels 5
ST. LOUIS, May 22 (UPI) -- Brad Penny struggled on the mound Friday and then hit an unlikely grand slam homer, boosting St. Louis to a 9-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
It was the third home run of Penny's 11-year career and his first RBI in two seasons.
The blast in the third inning snapped a 4-4 tie after he had allowed four runs in the second inning. Penny eventually left the game after three. His grand slam was the first in the major leagues by a pitcher since another Cardinal, Chris Carpenter, did it last Oct. 1.
Felipe Lopez also had a solo homer in the third to give the Cardinals a 9-4 lead and they went on to hand the Angels their first loss in three games.
Jason Motte (2-1) relieved Penny and threw two scoreless innings to get the win. Joel Pineiro (3-5), who spent the previous two seasons with St. Louis, allowed all nine runs on nine hits in three innings to take the loss.
