ANAHEIM, Calif., B.J. Upton homered to lead off the game and added a run-scoring double Monday in the Tampa Bay Rays' 4-3 decision over the Los Angeles Angels.
Upton's round-tripper set the tone for the Rays, who pulled even with the New York Yankees atop the American League East with the victory. The Yankees lost to Toronto 3-2 earlier Monday.
Ben Zobrist drove in a pair of runs with a double in the first and Upton's RBI double in the second gave Tampa Bay a 4-0 lead.
James Shields (12-11) made the lead hold up, allowing three runs (two earned) over six innings. Four relievers teamed up to hold the Angels scoreless over the final three innings, with Rafael Soriano picking up his 38th save in the ninth.
Scott Kazmir (8-11) absorbed the loss for the Angels, yielding three earned runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Hideki Matsui drove in two runs for the Angels.
