More National HD, 44 Extra HD Local Markets for DIRECTV


DIRECTV said that on Aug. 14 it will launch more than 30 additional HD networks, bringing its total high-def channel lineup to 130.

DIRECTV also said it will transmit all HD programming in the MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding standard by the end of the month. In addition, all high-def programming will be available in Dolby Digital audio format and later this year the DBS platform will begin offering movies in 1080p, the company said.

Among the new HD channels DIRECTV will launch next month are Showtime Extreme HD, Showtime Showcase HD, Planet Green HD, ABC Family HD, extra pay-per-view channels and an additional 12 regional sports networks.

DIRECTV also said it is planning to add 44 HD local channel markets. The company said that by the end of the year it plans to provide local HD broadcast channels in 121 cities, representing more than 88 percent of U.S. TV households.
