TOPSFIELD, Mass. -- A man fired shots into tires on a car in Topsfield late Wednesday to prevent his girlfriend’s son from driving the vehicle.

Police said a man became angry when he and his girlfriend came home to find her teenage son not home - the boy had been grounded.

When the teen arrived home, the suspect grabbed a gun and shot the tires at around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

“When they arrived at the scene they located a subject in the driveway near the residence,” said Topsfield Police Department Chief Even Haglund. “And the tires had been shot out of the vehicle.”

Police arrested 41-year-old Mark Letellier of Sandown, N.H. Police said he had been out to dinner with his girlfriend, who lives at the Topsfield home.

Police said the shot-up vehicle had just been driven home by the 16-year-old son. Police said Letellier was intoxicated when he fired at the car, claiming the son had broken curfew.

“It was a general disturbance between the mother and the son and the usage of the son’s vehicle,” said Haglund. “The boyfriend interceded and allegedly went out and fired shots in the vehicle’s tires.”

He fired the shots to prevent the son from driving the car again, according to police.

“He was over at our house [Wednesday] evening and he was doing his homework with my son. That’s where he’s been most evenings at our house. He’s an honor student. He’s a great kid,” said a concerned neighbor.

Letellier, who recently moved into the Topsfield home, is expected to make the $5,000 bail. Neighbors said they are now concerned for the safety of the son and his younger sister.

The suspect faces several charges that include possession of a firearm without a license, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a home and possession of a firearm while under the influence.

Police said this case remains under investigation.
