Palin says feminists sell women short

WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin urged conservative women to be uncompromising on abortion in a speech in Washington.

Palin said members of the Susan B. Anthony List, a right-wing counterpart to the pro-abortion rights Emily's List are creating an "emerging conservative feminist identity, The Washington Post reported. In a speech at a Friday breakfast meeting of 500 people, most of them women, she accused liberal women of selling young women short, while conservatives are saying they have the strength to deal with pregnancy.

"Our prominent woman sisterhood is telling these young women that they can give their child life, in addition to pursuing career and education and avocations. Society wants to tell these young women otherwise," she said. "These feminist groups want to tell these women that, 'No, you're not capable of doing both.' ... It's very hypocritical."

Palin used her own story, including her decision to continue her pregnancy after her son, Trig, was diagnosed in utero with Down's syndrome. She called the boy, now 2, her "greatest blessing."

She also talked about her daughter, Bristol, an unmarried teenage mother.

The Anthony list was founded as a right-wing version of Emily's List, which backs female candidates for office and supports abortion rights.
