Mounties are investigating an explosion in Burnaby, B.C., early Sunday that blew a hole in the wall of a community centre.

At about 3:30 a.m. PT, Burnaby police received calls from several people living near the Westburn Community Centre who described hearing a loud bang.

"All I know is it was loud," RCMP Insp. Al Ramey said. "It was heard up to four kilometres away by one of our police officers that was outside, and the 20 neighbours that phoned in heard that sharp crack or loud bang. [It's] definitely not child's play."

At the scene, police discovered that an explosive device had gone off at the community centre, blasting a hole nearly a metre wide through a cinder-block wall.

No one was hurt in the blast, which sent debris into the gymnasium and blew open heavy double doors, Ramey said.

"It was not specific or targeted against anyone in particular, and it could be as simple as a very large firecracker or as sophisticated as possibly a pipe bomb," Ramey said. "We don't know.

"We will know more once the identification specialist has finished his analysis."
